China renamed mountain in honour of Avatar

A Chinese mountain has been renamed in honour of the blockbuster movie, Avatar, the BBC has reported. The Southern Sky Column in Zhangjiajie, Hunan province, will now be known as the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, as local officials believe that photos of the mountain were used as the basis of the film’s fictional planet, Pandora. Avatar has made US$80 million so far in China, making it the most popular film ever in China.

Sentosa’s Merlion gets a facelift

The Merlion statue in Sentosa is undergoing a massive cleaning operation in preparation of a tourism boom on Singapore’s holiday island. According to a Channel NewsAsia report, the 37-metre tall statue will take 240 hours clean, as it prepares for an influx of photo-snapping tourists visiting the new Resorts World development.

Jakarta zoo eyes 4 million visitors

The operator of Ragunan Zoo in Jakarta is targeting between 3.5 million and 4 million visitors this year, the Jakarta Post has reported. The attraction last year recorded a 25% rise in visitor numbers, the zoo’s Marsawitri Gumay was reported saying, without specifying figures. The zoo currently exhibits 274 species of animal.
