Last year, 25,000 spectators came to celebrate the festival of lights in Trafalgar Square. Celebrating "the triumphant victory of good over evil", Diwali boasts live music, light shows and the opportunity to learn traditional Indian dances. Shama and Friends will open the day with a live set, followed by performances from acts including Screendolz and the Banjeree Kathak Group.

Who has made the greatest contribution to art in the last 12 months? The contemporary art prize returns for the 25th time. Last year saw the prize go to Mark Leckey, who explored transformation and desire through cartoon icons. You can see the works of the nominated artists at Tate Britain before the final choice live on Channel 4.

London is hosting the World Championships for the first time, with some of the best gymnasts on Earth providing a foretaste of the gymnastic events in the 2012 London Olympics.

This exhibition explores the music scene of the Sixties. On offer are photos and memorabilia, some rare and previously unseen, of iconic artists including Sandie Shaw, Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones. The material will be split into 10 sections, each representing a single year of the decade.

This year’s festival will open with the world premiere of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox. After that, 191 feature films and 113 shorts films will be screened in venues across London, covering a diverse programme of entertainment including world cinema and experimental films. Masterclasses in scriptwriting and directing are also on offer from some of the industry’s finest, while the likes of Clive Owen and Julianne Moore will be giving talks.
London Jazz Festival, Various venues, 13-22 November

An eclectic mix of jazz stalwarts and fresh talent will be playing at various venues across London during the 10-day event. From big band numbers to intimate solo performances, this festival covers all varieties of jazz showcased by some of the world’s best musicians. The full programme of performances is yet to be confirmed although Dave Holland, Sonny Rollins and the BBC Symphony Orchestra are set to play.
Lord Mayor’s Show, City of London, 14 November

Watch the Lord Mayor of London journey to the Royal Courts of Justice to pledge allegiance to the Crown. The procession travels from Mansion House to the Royal Courts of Justice, and the event is marked by a 30-minute firework display at 5pm from a barge moored in the Thames between Blackfriars and Waterloo bridges. Head to Victoria Embankment, Blackfriars or Waterloo Bridge for the best views.
Winter Wonderland, Hyde Park, 21 Nov-3 Jan

Hyde Park’s Wonderland is home to London’s largest temporary ice rink, as well as Zippo’s Circus, which provides a 30-minute show every day, a fairground and a 200ft-high observation wheel for magical views over London. Adults will enjoy the Christmas market, which has more than 50 stalls, as well as cosy cafés.
Tennis ATP World Tour Finals, O2, 22-29 November

The top eight ATP players go head to head for $5m prize money at the O2. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray (above), Juan Martin del Potro and Novak Djokovic (last year’s winner) have qualified for the tournament, which Federer has won four times already.
